Traditionally, there has been a divide between risk managers (buyers) and insurers (sellers). Over time, risk mangers built an expertise in identifying risks and finding the appropriate insurance product to use to transfer that risk. With the advent InsurTech, RiskTech, and wellness-focused startups, the lines between risk managers’ and insurers’ roles are blurring.
Insurers through InsurTech partnerships can now offer services to mitigate risks before they happen and improve recovery from incidents after they happen. These three-way partnerships between startup, insurer, and risk manager have tremendous potential to improve the health and safety of our workforce and mitigate disasters before they happen.
Surrounding this environment is an ever-present need to do business in an environmentally conscious and socially responsible way. As a trend towards ESG moves through the Fortune 500, insurers need to establish their ESG positions and use them to their strategic advantage.
Hear from subject matter experts on wellness, safety, and ESG on the new approaches being used by startups to prevent claims before they happen.

The insurance industry has one of the highest customer acquisition costs of any industry. It can cost more than seven times as much to acquire a new customer as maintaining an existing one. (ITL). However, the global protection gap is nearly $1.2 trillion. (Risk & Insurance). This means there is a lot of opportunity on the table across all lines of business for insurers.
Insurers now are seeking ways to acquire new customers that rewrite the existing rules and drive down the cost of acquisition. With affinity groups no longer in vogue, InsurTechs now represent the dominant strategy for insurers to reach new customers. Some carriers are focusing on building those innovations internally through special projects often called internal InsurTechs. Other carriers are seeking help from external InsurTechs.
Hear from the carriers that are doing it. Learn how to leverage internal and external InsurTechs to drive down the cost of acquisition and spur growth.

InsurTech NY Event Details
Paying claims typically represents 2/3 or more of every premium dollar. While it is natural that policyholders should expect to receive payment when they face adversity, the process is not simple or automatic. In fact, in 2019, homeowners’ insurers averaged 8.8% in loss adjustment expenses (III).
The traditional incumbent insurer experience of sending out an adjuster and manually estimating a loss is starkly different than the Lemonade way of initiating a chat, video conversion, and automatically adjudicating a loss. However, the path to Lemonade like experience is not something that can be done instantly. Carriers must upgrade their core and build claims automation to be able to change the custom claims experience.
Hear from insurance influencers to keep up with the InsurTechs through claims automation and core system evolution.

In 2020, InsurTech investment reached an all-time high of $7.1 billion with over 370 deals (WTW Q4 Report). The trend of increasing investment continued even during one of the darkest periods for insurers who were facing Covid liability, record natural disasters, and low interest rates.
While this number is significant, it still pales in comparison to the overall FinTech investment of $106 billion in 2020 (KMPG Pulse of FinTech). While investment increased, 2020 was a breakout year for InsurTechs to join the public markets. Lemonade, Root, Clover Health, Hippo, Metromile, and States Title, and others went public through the traditional process or Special Purpose Acquisitions Companies (SPACs). Early VCs and Corporate VCs realized 10x+ returns on many of these companies.
With the red-hot market, the question remains for many insurers and venture capitalists, how can they start investing in InsurTechs or support their existing portfolios. This event will explore early-stage, growth-stage, and mature InsurTech investing. It will also include networking opportunities with influential InsurTech investors.

InsurTech NY Event Details
The distribution of technology is not equal. COVID has brought to light how the distribution of technology can quickly compound into changes in market share and ultimately wealth. Industries that are predominantly connected to physical interactions were immediately penalized as the world moved digital nearly a month.
The insurance industry falls somewhere in the middle of the distribution of technology scale. Most life insurers still rely on medical exams and blood samples to bind a policy. Most commercial insurers require in-person inspections on new policies and in-person adjusters to adjudicate claims. However, some personal lines carriers and startups like Lemonade have advanced to the point they complete the entire customer lifecycle in a digital world.
Insurers that take the cue from COVID as a warning sign of the impact of emerging technology on their industry, they will have a unique opportunity to improve efficiency, reduce combine ratios, and win more market share. Low hanging fruit exists across the value chain from quoting to underwriting to claims.
Learn through this event how to build the business case for emerging technologies and integrate them into your existing systems to stay ahead of the curve. See how carriers and brokers are using RPA, IoT, and AI to improve their business.

How It Works
We will be using a state of the art Remo.co technology which allows us to fully experience the matchmaking event virtually.
Every employer has a virtual booth. Each booth will have 4 chairs. Employers can have ~2 representatives sitting virtually in the booth.
Attendees can hop from one booth to the next, just like they would in a real expo hall. They do this by clicking on one of the open chairs in each of the booths.
Once they click on a chair, they will start engaging in a video call right away with the employer’s representative and other(s) who are sitting in the booth, just like in a real expo! If there is a mutual interest, you can exchange info or go up to the interview hall to do a 1-on-1 private interview.
See the video below which gives a quick overview of how Remo Conference technology works.

InsurTech NY Event Details
The global pandemic has brought to light one of the worst-kept secrets of IT Departments. The majority of their budgets are spent on maintaining legacy systems and of organizations that were started before the space era. Many of those legacy systems were built before the graduating class of Gen-Zs computer science majors were born.
The challenge in starting transformation projects is that they are high-risk because most projects are mission-critical and have no redundancy. Insurers cannot do without their policy administration, billing, or claims systems for even a few hours. And, transformation is expensive. According to a study by Deloitte and LIMRA [1], the estimated payback period of 60% of transformation projects is more than 4 years or unknown.
Fortunately, all hope is not lost. Almost half of the companies surveyed by LIMRA [1] have completed at least one transformation so far. Traditional core systems providers have developed paths to derisk transformation and InsurTechs now have solutions to tackle challenges through APIs, Microservices, and partial replacements. Learn the latest changes from our panels of experts who have been through dozens of digital transformations.

Modern Risk & Insurance Learning Series: Risk Management in the Age of COVID. Hosted by Houston Chapter of RIMS, TrustLayer & InsurtechNY
About this Event
In the age of COVID, risk managers must shift from behind the scenes to leaders on the forefront of the business. Every decision a business makes in the age of COVID has a parallel risk impact from back-to-work planning to building layouts, to required PPE at work. Advanced data and analytics capabilities hold the promise to change the way carriers and brokers do business. New data sources from the Internet of Things, aggregators, and third parties can provide a rich data set for making better predictions and identifying potential fraud. However, most legacy systems are not built to readily integrate with the new data sources. This event will feature an underwriting and a claims focused panel.
Learn how underwriters are balancing the costs of adding new data sources with the predictive benefits. Panelists will also discuss the potential ramification of using analytics and AI for improved predictive capability and the potential for over-fitting the data.
Also, learn how claims leaders are leveraging advanced data capabilities to augment the workflow of adjusters, cut the time necessary to adjust claims, and predict and prevent fraud early in the process. Panelists will also discuss the challenges of implementing new claims solutions across business lines and downstream with adjusters, TPAs, and IAs.

Until 2016, InsurTech was not on the map. That trend quickly changed as investments in InsurTech and enabling insurance startups raised over $2.7B in 2017 (FinTech Global). While this number pales in comparison to the almost $40B invested in FinTech in 2017 (FinTech Global), it shows there is a large amount of activity.
Global insurers and reinsurers are waking up to a changing world and a changing demographic where the value of their data and the stores of their capital are no longer a differentiator. The rise of millennial insurance buyers and the digital economy is forcing insurers to start transformations, buy new technologies, or bet on their future with some InsurTech investments.
This panel discussion will review the current market for investing in InsurTech. Further, it will discuss whether the change in the attitude towards investing in InsurTech startups just short-term fad or the path forward to evolve the insurance industry fundamentally.
Join our panelists from a diverse set of Venture Capital and Insurance-based Corporate Venture Capital groups to discuss the trends and more importantly, the staying power of InsurTech investing.
Attending InsurTech Connect (ITC) event can be overwhelming, especially if it is your first time. Understanding how to maximize the event, using the Brella networking, finding the right sessions to attend, and getting around the MGM Grand can be a challenge. To help you get the most out of ITC, we will meet at the end of the first day of the event, and discuss and learn from each other on how to get the most out of the event.
But all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. ☠ After some live learning discussion, we will head over to the nearby escape room (1.5 blocks from the MGM Grand) and participate in a Dual Escape Room Challenge to literally escape from ITC – at least temporarily. Find out who is better – startups, carriers/brokers or investors – at finding clues and navigating challenges in the escape room!
We only have 20 limited spots for this event. Please register early.
Working with InsurTech startups has quickly become the mantra of insurance innovation leaders and forward-thinking business units. However, it goes without saying – how do you do it?
To overcome these hurdles, carriers and brokers often have to develop creative workarounds to be “startup-friendly.” The traditional bridge has been for an innovation group to manage a proof of concept or POC to introduce the startup into the organization. This POC process fails more than 75% of the time.
Hear war stories from InsurTechs and insurance carriers with experience working on these projects. The program will feature two panels. One panel will share stories from the startup perspective and one will have stories from the corporate perspective. Panelists from insurers and InsurTechs will discuss how to make it through the process and what happens after a successful POC.
