InsurTech NY News: Mamdani
Despair, but don’t lose all hope.
NYC woke up this week to a mayor that Jamie Dimon calls “more a Marxist than a socialist.”
Mamdani’s platform values affordability, improving infrastructure, and the willingness to pool resources for shared outcomes.
Each of these frames in a political context represents socialism.
Turnout topped 2 million for the first time since 1969—meaning this wasn’t a niche protest vote; it was a mandate-sized sample. Also real: the youth wave is not vibes; it’s data. Early voting surged and Millennials over-indexed.
Whether you cheer that or cringe, it signals buyer readiness for voluntary risk pooling—exactly how insurance works: many pay small amounts so a few can be made whole. That’s not a bug; it’s the product.
So, policy views aside, let’s embrace the young people’s desire for products that philosophically align with socialism. Go out and sell more insurance.
