Stephen West is a Partner at StepStone Group. StepStone is a global private markets investment firm. Stephen works on the firm’s venture capital and growth equity investing. His expertise spans venture funds, technology investing, and private markets. He was promoted to Partner in 2025 after several years with the firm. Stephen West spoke at the 2025 InsurTech Spring Conference on the panel “Investing in Emerging VC Funds,” alongside David Gritz, Evan Finkel, Sam Huleatt, and John Masson.
Stephen joined StepStone as a Principal and advanced to Managing Director. Before that, he was a Principal at Greenspring Associates. Greenspring was a venture capital investment firm that later combined with StepStone. Across both firms, he has focused on backing venture funds and growth-stage companies. This gives him a broad view of the venture ecosystem.
Earlier in his career, Stephen worked in technology investment banking at JMP Securities. He also spent nearly three years as a management consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton. There he focused on strategy and organization.
Stephen began his career as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served as a Captain in human intelligence and counterintelligence. His service included a deployment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. That experience shaped his approach to analysis and decision-making under pressure.
Stephen studied General Engineering and Arabic at the United States Naval Academy. He was also an Olmsted Undergraduate Scholar. He later earned an MBA from Georgetown University.
