Scott Whitehead is the Executive Underwriting Officer for Casualty at Markel. Markel is a global specialty insurer. Scott leads casualty underwriting for the company. He has spent his entire career at Markel, spanning more than 25 years. His expertise covers specialty underwriting, embedded insurance, and insurtech partnerships. Scott Whitehead spoke at the 2024 InsurTech Spring Conference on the panel “Living up to the Embedded Insurance Promise,” alongside Isaac Espinoza, Ryan Duques, Brian Casey, and Gabriel Weiss.
Before his current role, Scott spent more than five years as Managing Director of Markel Insurtech Underwriters. That unit partners with insurtechs, MGAs, and digital platforms. He helped build Markel’s approach to backing new distribution models. Earlier, he served as Managing Director of Markel Digital. He led the company’s digital underwriting efforts there.
Scott’s career at Markel spans nearly every level of the business. He began in marketing roles and moved into underwriting. He worked as an underwriter at Essex Insurance Company. He then advanced through territory underwriting management. He later led Binding P&C and Markel Specialty as Managing Director. That path gave him a rare, end-to-end view of specialty insurance.
Scott holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Virginia Tech.
