Nick Gerhart

Nick Gerhart is the Chief Operating Officer at Homesteaders Life Company. Homesteaders Life is a provider of funeral funding and final expense products. Nick is a leader with deep experience in strategy, regulation, law, and innovation. He is also a former state insurance regulator. He advises and serves on the boards of numerous insurtech startups. Nick Gerhart spoke at the 2025 InsurTech Spring Conference on the panel “Bringing Tech to Ultimate Loss,” alongside Dean Lambert, Collin Bhojwani, and Sophie Ruddock.

Nick served as Iowa Insurance Commissioner from 2013 to 2016. He oversaw one of the largest domestic insurance states in the nation. He led a team of more than 100 professionals through complex issues. Those included the Affordable Care Act and the liquidation of an insurance company. He has testified before the US Congress on insurance and health care policy.

Before Homesteaders, Nick was Chief Administrative Officer at Farm Bureau Financial Services. There he led human resources, government relations, and enterprise strategy. His role included evaluating startups and innovative ideas for the company.

Nick is deeply involved in the insurtech community. He served on the board of Carpe Data through a successful exit. He advises companies including Assured Allies, Sureify, Gain Compliance, and Pinpoint Predictive. He is also a founding mentor of the Global Insurance Accelerator.

Nick holds a JD and a master’s in health administration from Saint Louis University. He also earned a BA from the University of Northern Iowa.

Nick is a returning InsurTech NY speaker. He also joined a 2023 keynote fireside chat on engaging with AI-powered insurtechs.
