InsurTech NY News: Are Your Executives Safe?

In less than a month we have seen the murder of a high profile insurance executive; the foiling of a plot by a copycat Florida woman; and the start of a process to seek justice for the executive’s family.

The opening above left out the suspect and company name to help you reflect, “could this happen to you?”

We suffer from ego and a sense of invincibility until something changes. And something has happened.

We witnessed the first major act of violence against a Fortune 500 executive in 30 years. Last time, it was the 1992 kidnapping and murder of Sidney Reso (Exxon). And, before that it was Ned Doheny (Pemex) in 1929. So it is unlikely that your executives are in danger.

That said, there are proactive steps you can take. Use common sense and establish a clear protocol. Tips include:

• Don’t travel alone. If you must, stick to busy areas where you can blend in.
• Be unpredictable—don’t take the same route to work every day.
• Avoid sharing your public appearances before they happen.
• Employ security and take all threats seriously.
