Stephen Ziegelmayer is the Assistant Vice President of Underwriting Artificial Intelligence at Travelers. Travelers is one of the largest property and casualty insurers in the United States. In this role, Stephen leads work at the intersection of underwriting and AI. He focuses on modernizing underwriting capabilities and improving how risk and exposure are evaluated. He brings more than 15 years of experience in P&C underwriting and strategic transformation. Stephen spoke at a past InsurTechNY event.
Stephen has spent more than 17 years at Travelers. He began as a middle market underwriter, learning the business from the ground up. He then moved into strategy roles, leading strategic planning and execution. He later served as Senior Director of Strategy, Insights, and Innovation. That work covered competitive intelligence, market research, and startup partnerships. He now applies that experience to underwriting AI.
Before Travelers, Stephen was an underwriter at the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency. His expertise spans underwriting, corporate strategy, and innovation strategy. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Columbus House, a nonprofit organization. There he helped set strategy and establish governance practices.
Stephen holds a Master of Science in Science and Technology Leadership from Brown University. He also earned an MBA from Salve Regina University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Rhode Island.
