Head of Underwriting,

Angel Song

Aphelian

Angel Song is Head of Underwriting at Aphelian, a specialty insurance platform built for the solar industry. Backed by NYSERDA and Lloyd’s Lab, Aphelian focuses on helping solar asset owners, developers, financiers, insurers, MGAs, and brokers address complex renewable energy risks. As Head of Underwriting and one of Aphelian’s founding members, Angel serves as the company’s primary underwriting authority and helped build its underwriting framework for a technically complex and emerging asset class. Angel was a past MGA Lab Mentor.

At Aphelian, Angel Song pioneered a first-of-its-kind specialty lineslip facility at Lloyd’s of London for mid-sized distributed solar energy assets, a risk class and asset size that had not previously been systematically underwritten in the Lloyd’s market. Angel designed the framework behind the facility, including eligibility criteria, coverage structures, catastrophe aggregation controls, referral protocols, and policy terms. She also built a proprietary Underwriting Workbench that integrates a custom risk-scoring engine, peril heat maps, real-time portfolio analytics, and aggregation dashboards to improve underwriting precision and operational efficiency.

Angel also directs Aphelian’s marketing and business development strategy, including broker-facing pitch materials, a Lloyd’s market data room, and a submission pipeline management system. She has cultivated relationships with U.S. energy brokers and specialty retail markets, positioning Aphelian’s lineslip as a solution for solar developers, project finance transactions, and private equity-backed renewable portfolios.

Before joining Aphelian, Angel Song served as Assistant Vice President at Corporate Risk Solutions, where she provided renewable energy consulting for private equity clients and advised on large-scale solar and clean energy projects across global markets. Earlier, Angel worked as a Middle Market Underwriter at Chubb and as Team Lead Underwriter for Middle Market and International Reverse Flow at Sompo International, where she managed a premium book of more than $12 million and specialized in Asian reverse-flow business.

Named to the RISE 35 Under 35 list, Angel Song brings an underwriting-led perspective on renewable energy insurance, solar risk, specialty underwriting, Lloyd’s market capacity, and the role of insurance in scaling the clean energy transition.
