Andrew Mais serves as the Commissioner of the Connecticut Insurance Department, where he leads the agency in its mission to protect consumers and ensure a robust, competitive insurance marketplace. Appointed in 2019, Commissioner Mais has focused on balancing strong consumer protections with the need for innovation in the insurance sector. Under his leadership, the Department has been a national leader in regulatory modernization, health equity, and climate-related risk discussions, while maintaining its commitment to transparency and public engagement.
Before joining the Department, Mais was a member of Deloitte’s Insurance Industry Group, where he advised U.S. and international clients on regulatory strategy, public policy, and governance issues. His work included helping insurers anticipate and navigate the rapidly changing risk landscape, particularly in relation to regulatory compliance and emerging technologies.
Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Public Affairs and Research for the New York State Insurance Department, where he managed communications and strategic outreach during key regulatory initiatives. He also held leadership roles in nonprofit governance and was a longtime host of a Connecticut political affairs program, using the platform to engage the public on legislative and policy issues affecting the state.
Throughout his career, Commissioner Mais has brought a unique blend of public policy expertise, regulatory insight, and stakeholder engagement to every role. He currently represents Connecticut on multiple national committees and working groups focused on insurance innovation, systemic risk, and consumer access, including leadership roles within the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
Commissioner Mais is recognized for his collaborative approach, thought leadership, and dedication to modernizing the insurance ecosystem to better serve individuals, families, and businesses across Connecticut and beyond.
