There is one provision that is a big deal for innovation: updates to Qualified Small Business Stock (QSBS) tax breaks.
In case you did not know. Startups designated as a C-Corp and following QSBS regulations provide a federal tax exemption (no taxes at exit) to founders and investors.
That means angel investors, limited partners, VCs, and CVCs all have an extra boost.
The major improvements are:
- Reduced holding period: year three (50%), year four (75%), year five (full)
- Increased per-taxpayer cap and an increase in total assets allowed
All of these changes, hopefully, will drive more capital to invest in startups that otherwise would go to later-stage private equity.
This newsletter is not tax advice, please consult your tax advisor or attorney if you plan to leverage QSBS rules, but if you are looking for startups to invest in, feel free to reach out to contact@insurtechny.com.
