In the last minute of his address, Warren Buffett shared that he will be stepping down from Berkshire Hathaway.
Deemed the world’s best investor. Buffett zigged where Wall Street zagged. Focusing simply on long-term value investing, he brought midwest common sense values to a world where complexity helped sell the next product.
The Buffett quote that impacts us the most is: “Never invest in a business you cannot understand.”
One industry that Buffett clearly understands is insurance.
In case you did not know, Berkshire owns no less than 21 insurance companies including: GEICO, National Indemnity, General Re, Alleghany, TransRe, RSUI, CapSpecialty, BH Life, BHHC, GUARD, USLI, MedPro, MLMIC, Central States Indemnity, Kansas Bankers Surety, BHSI, BH Direct, biBERK, BHAssurance, BH International Insurance, BH European Insurance
This should be a lesson for us all; invest in what you know, invest in your own industry. Or at the very least take the time to read up on Warren Buffett’s legacy in the many biographies about him.
Spotlight: Most Active Investors and Advisors
In the spirit of Warren Buffett, we decided to conduct research to see which individual people have the most active investments in the InsurTech space. And, have the biggest vested stake in InsurTechs succeeding.
As you will notice, we were not concerned about the Venture Capital funds, but the people behind them that built them and personally were impacted by the success or failure of their startup portfolio.
To be the most inclusive, the list calculated the total number of startups with equity stake, not the amount invested. Here is what counted towards equity stakes:
- Direct investments – equity acquired by direct investments in private InsurTechs
- Activity requirement – InsurTechs must be active. Exited or shutdown companies were excluded
- Only validated ownership – if an entity invested in the fund and it could not be traced to an individual owner, it was excluded
- Accepted sources of equity stake: General Partner (GP) carry for VCs in the funds they are partners, direct investments made by an individual into a startup, and advisory shares obtained from helping founders
We reached out to active investors in the community but may have missed some of them. If you want to be added, email contact@insurtechny.com with your data.
This is our first attempt, and data will be continuously updated as we get more data and participation. (Note that David Gritz and Tony Lew tops the charts mainly due to their positions obtained from InsurTech Fund and MGA Lab).
